Arab League chief warns Houthis for violating ceasefire

Cairo: The Houthi rebels withdrew from a ceasefire that has been in force in Yemen for the past six months. At the same time, the Houthis threatened to target foreign companies that steal fuel from Yemen, saying that they have the right to it. But Arab League chief Ahmed Aboul Gheit warned that instability would return to Yemen due to the Houthis breaking ceasefire and the Houthis would have to pay a heavy price for this.

Arab League chief warns Houthis for violating ceasefireA civil war has raged in Yemen since 2014. Iran-backed Houthi rebels have taken control of the capital Sana’a, toppling Hadi’s government in Yemen. Over the past seven years, more than 400,000 people have been killed and millions have been displaced in the conflict waged by the military coalition of Saudi Arabia and Arab allies against the Houthis. Against this backdrop, a UN-brokered ceasefire between the Yemeni army and the Houthis was implemented in April.

After the ceasefire expired on October 2, the UN called on the Houthis to extend the ceasefire. But the Houthi rebels flatly rejected it. The Houthis also threatened to continue attacks on foreign handlers and their supporters. After that, the head of the Arab League warned the Houthis of a new conflict. This has increased the possibility of a new civil war in Yemen.
