Tehran: The anti-hijab movement has entered its third week and reached schools and colleges in Iran. Videos have surfaced of students thrashing a government employee who entered the school for compulsory hijab and then throwing the hijab away. Iran’s teachers’ union has also announced its support for the anti-hijab movement. The agitation flared up after it surfaced that two girls under 17 were brutally killed in operation by the Iranian security forces a few days ago. Meanwhile, the President of Iran, Ibrahim Raisi, has called for immediate stopping of these protests.

16-year-old Sarina Ismailzadeh, a famous Iranian social media personality, and 17-year-old Nika Shahkarmi participated in the anti-hijab protest. But both of them have been missing for the last ten days. Iranian troops handed over Sarina’s body to her family after her parents started a search. It was revealed that Sarina had died after being hit on the head with a heavy baton. Nika’s body was found in a nearby mortuary. She also had a fractured skull and a severe nose injury.

This had repercussions in Iranian schools and colleges. On Monday, a government official who entered an Iranian school to inspect the compulsory hijab was surrounded by female students. Through these videos, these students made anti-government slogans in the face of the said officer and then forced the officer to run away. Just a few hours ago, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Iran’s Supreme Leader Imam Ali Khamenei, criticized the movement as a riot and not a protest. Also, Khamenei accused the United States and Israel of inciting riots. After that, on Tuesday, the President of Iran, Ibrahim Raisi, appealed to the countrymen for unity. At the same time, President Raisi has also blamed Iran’s adversaries for igniting this agitation.

Meanwhile, Canada has announced sanctions against the Iranian government that has been cracking down on these protesters. US President Joe Biden warned that Iran would pay the price soon. European countries can also resort to sanctions action against Iran in this matter.
