Davos: ‘I believe that Iran has an obligation to give up its nuclear program. I believe that Iran must be in compliance with the terms of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and Iran, if it wants to be a member in good standing of the international community, needs to respect international law, needs to respect international order,’ demanded Adel al-Jubeir, a senior minister of the Saudi Foreign Ministry.

It is mandatory for Iran to stop its nuclear programme – Senior leader from Saudi demandsMoreover, Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), had recently expressed serious concern about Iran’s nuclear programme. Grossi claimed that Iran enriched Uranium to 60% purity at the Fordow project and was preparing to increase it. He further stated that by rapidly growing Uranium enrichment, Iran was getting close to producing a nuclear bomb. Grossi had also said that by closing the nuclear plant’s doors to Atomic Energy Agency’s inspectors, suspicion about Iran’s nuclear programme increased.

Besides, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and neighbouring Arab allies had endorsed the warning by the head of the Atomic Energy Commission. Later, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, the E3 countries, also predicted that Grossi’s accusations would be fatal for negotiations with Iran. Furthermore, the Russia-Ukraine conflict caused this issue to get neglected. Besides, Iran also had proposed talks with Saudi Arabia during this period. Iran had said it was keen to improve relations with Saudi Arabia.

But at the meeting in Davos, the senior leaders of the Saudi Foreign Ministry raised the issue of the nuclear programme and increased pressure on Iran. Jubeir asserted that if Iran wanted the cooperation of Saudi and other countries, it was mandatory for Iran to stop the nuclear programme. Meanwhile, Saudi warned a few weeks ago that Saudi would also not be far behind for long if Iran becomes nuclear-equipped.
