'Diplomatic Boycott' of Beijing Olympics by the Biden administration a joke

Washington / Beijing – On Monday, US President Joe Biden announced a diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympics in China. The opposition has heavily criticized Biden’s decision, and former UN envoy Nikki Haley has slammed the boycott as a joke. Even before the US announcement, Lithuania in Europe had also announced a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics. Failure of the Biden administration to upset China with the decision to impose a diplomatic boycott on the Winter Olympics before a small country like Lithuania is having its repercussions in the United States.

The Chinese capital, Beijing, is set to host the Winter Olympics next year. Despite the shadows of the Coronavirus Pandemic looming over these competitions, the Chinese communist regime has begun grand preparations for the competitions. The Coronavirus Pandemic actions in Hong Kong, Taiwan, the South China Sea and Tibet have tarnished China’s international image. At the same time, accusations of genocide against the Uyghurs in Xinjiang have put the communist regime in a difficult position. Against this backdrop, China is trying to reduce its opposition and criticism and improve its image through these competitions.

But Western nations have taken an aggressive stance on the issue of genocide of the Uyghurs, signalling a political boycott of the Olympics. Some countries had even passed resolutions in this regard. The international community’s attention is focused on exactly what role the United States will play in this regard. On Monday night, President Biden announced his decision to impose a diplomatic boycott on the Beijing Winter Olympics. A White House spokesman said the boycott was aimed at ending Xinjiang’s genocide and human rights abuses.

But Biden’s decision has provoked strong reactions from the United States. Nikki Haley, former US ambassador to the United Nations and leader of the Republican Party, called the decision of the diplomatic boycott a joke. ‘China doesn’t care if Biden and his team show up. They want our athletes,’ Haley said. Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also said that China’s ruling regime does not care for political boycotts. Pompeo has demanded that Biden take a firm stand against the communist regime.

Meanwhile, China has reacted sharply to the announcement of the US boycott. Zhao Lijian, the spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry, said that the United States should be prepared to pay the price while registering strong protests through political media.
