UK should boycott China’s Winter Olympics over Uyghur genocide, demands UK parliamentary committee

London: – The parliamentary committee in the United Kingdom demanded, ‘The United Kingdom should teach China, perpetrating Uyghur genocide in the Xinjiang province, a lesson by withdrawing from the Winter Olympics to be held in Beijing next year. Products from the Xinjiang province also should be banned. The committee has appealed through its report that the time has come to hold China responsible for the human rights of the Uyghur people. US lawmakers also are making a similar demand with the Biden administration.

In its report submitted on Thursday, the British foreign policy committee appealed to Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his colleagues for a stern stand against China. The report demands, ‘The world after a major atrocity and tragedy says that it will not be allowed to be repeated. But the atrocities continue. The time to act against China over the atrocities against the Uyghurs is not passed.’

Tom Tugendhat, the Conservative Party leader from the committee, criticised that China is showering atrocities on the Uyghur people in the Xinjiang province. Tom Tugendhat said, ‘Any cultured government cannot ignore the atrocities meted out by China to the Uyghurs in Xinjiang, and this should be treated as an international crisis.’

Tugendhat warned, ‘If we keep ignoring the atrocities meted out by China, then we will encourage this dragon further to enter our houses.’ Tugendhat and other lawmakers from the British Parliament demanded through the report that the United Kingdom should not participate in the Winter Olympics to be held in Beijing in the next year. British leaders should also not attend the games.

Although the Johnson government in the United Kingdom is using a very aggressive language against China, the actual actions are not as aggressive. The Tibetan and Uyghur people settled in the United Kingdom had demanded that the United Kingdom should boycott the Winter Olympics to be held in China next year because of the atrocities against Uyghurs, acquisition of Tibet and oppression of democracy in Hong Kong.

Two months ago, former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley had compared the Chinese Communist regime with the Nazi regime in Germany during the second world war. Haley demanded, ‘China is carrying out a genocide of the Uyghurs, similar to the one carried out by Hitler of the Jewish people. Before the second world war, the United States and its allies had boycotted the Berlin Olympics. Similarly, the United States should boycott the 2022 winter Olympics to be held in China.’
