At least 50 killed in violence in Nigeria

Abuja: – At least 50 people have been killed in violence in the Kaduna province near the Nigerian capital, Abuja. According to local security officials, the victims were mainly farmers. It has been speculated that the violence may have been carried out by a group of dacoits or a terrorist organisation. In the last few months, groups such as Boko Haram and IS have sought the help of bandits and criminal gangs to expand their reach.

Kaduna is known as one of the most volatile provinces in northern Nigeria. The last few months have seen an increase in kidnappings, terrorist attacks and ethnic violence in most of the northern provinces and the incident in Kaduna also seems to be a part of that. The assailants launched heavy attacks on three villages in the Idasu area. These include Kauran Fawa, Marke and Riheya.

The first attack took place on Friday last week. Nine people were killed. However, the attacks resumed on Saturday and Sunday. Thirty-eight people have been killed and several others seriously injured in the attacks. It is feared that the number of victims will increase. Many houses, properties and farms were set on fire during the attack.

Military units were deployed in the area after the attack and a search operation was launched. President Mohammed Buhari has conveyed his condolences to the attack victims and promised action. However, it has come to light that the local people are dissatisfied with the assurances given by the government, including the President. Earlier this year, students were abducted in March and April, attacking educational institutions in Kaduna. Security was also strengthened for some time after that.

But it has come to light that terrorist groups and gangs of bandits are carrying out attacks by overpowering the security forces. Other Nigerian provinces, including Kaduna, have small local gangs affiliated with the terrorist organisations Al Qaeda and IS. These also include gangs that rob cattle. The Nigerian government has failed to crack down on terrorist groups and local gangs.
