BRICS is referred to as a group of five countries, i.e. Russia, India, China, Brazil and South Africa. Until two years ago, there was no discussion about the expansion of this group. But since last year, Latin America, Africa, the Gulf and Southeast Asian countries have started asking to join the group. This issue was also raised in last year’s BRICS meeting.

A special meeting of BRICS foreign ministers will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, on June 2-3. At this time, an important decision can be taken on the expansion of BRICS, informed Anil Sooklal, Ambassador of South Africa to BRICS. Till now, 13 countries have directly inquired about membership in BRICS, including Saudi Arabia, Iran, UAE, Argentina, Algeria, Egypt, Bahrain and Indonesia, while six countries have indirectly asked for BRICS membership.

Meanwhile, this expansion of BRICS could be a blow to the US and European countries. Moreover, there were claims that the US was preparing to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin if he attended the meeting in South Africa.
