US to deploy nuclear submarine for South Korea – senior US officials claim

Washington/ Seoul – The US may deploy nuclear submarines to South Korea to protect its ally against North Korea’s growing nuclear threat. Relevant US officials claimed the announcement was expected during talks between US President Joe Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol. However, the former National Security Adviser of the United States, John Bolton, suggested that the Biden administration should deploy nuclear weapons in South Korea instead of launching nuclear submarines. Bolton says this will send a strong message to countries that could threaten US interests, including North Korea.

Moreover, North Korea has increased the intensity of its missile tests in the past two years. A few weeks ago, US officials admitted that North Korea’s missile tests were on hold as all attention focused on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. But by saying it has a close eye on the developments in the Korean area, the US announced that it is planning a new military strategy against North Korea, Japan, and South Korea. North Korea is preparing for its seventh nuclear test.

Under such circumstances, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol arrived in the United States on Wednesday. President Yeol will meet with US President Joe Biden in the next few hours. A few weeks ago, a survey report showed that the South Korean public no longer believes in the Biden administration. South Korean citizens had expressed that if North Korea attacks their country soon, the United States will protect them. Against this backdrop, the meeting of President Biden and President Yeol has attracted the attention of analysts and media in the Korean field.

Furthermore, US news outlets insist that the Biden administration remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting its fellow country against the North Korean threat. The US will deploy its most advanced nuclear-powered submarines to the port of Busan to protect South Korea, senior US officials claim. At the same time, the White House indicates that a discussion between Biden and Yeol is possible on the issue of denuclearisation of the Korean area. But former US National Security Adviser John Bolton criticized that deployment of nuclear submarines would not achieve anything.

Meanwhile, Bolton has suggested that South Korea should re-deploy nuclear weapons if it wants to respond to the North Korean threat. Bolton claims that this will increase South Korea’s confidence in US commitment. A few weeks ago, a local poll found that South Koreans said that they could not trust the US for the country’s security. The survey concluded that South Korea should start efforts for nuclear weapons rather than relying on the US. The President of South Korea also gave the same signal. In such a situation, everyone is looking forward to the United States announcement after the Biden-Yeol discussion.
