European nations adopt border controls once again to counter refugee influx

Warsaw/Brussels: The illegal influx of refugees into the European Union (EU) is increasing continuously. In such a situation, it had recently come to light that the differences among the EU members regarding this issue were quite intense. Now, the member countries of the bloc have started imposing restrictions again in the border areas, ignoring the internal rules and scope. Citing the arrival of a large number of refugees from Slovakia as the reason, Poland has increased deployment at the border and has announced that it will issue new entry rules. The Czech Republic has also announced the adoption of ‘border controls’.

Just a few days ago, more than 11 thousand refugees had entered Italy’s ‘Lampedusa Island’ in four days. Due to this terrible infiltration, this Italian island had to declare an emergency. After this incident in Italy, the activities of concurring to new agreements in the EU intensified. However, sharp differences on the issue of refugees came to light later among member countries like Italy, Germany, France, Poland, Austria, and Hungary.

Due to these differences, the agreement on refugees in the European Union is stuck, and information about Hungary and Poland using the right of denial is coming to light. There is now talk of the EU countries adopting ‘border controls’ as the next step. According to the ‘Schengen Agreement’ in the European Union, citizens of member countries do not require documents to visit other countries. However, sources said new rules will now be implemented due to the influx of refugees.

In 2022, the number of refugees infiltrating European countries exceeded 1 million. At the same time, more than six lakh refugees arrived in Europe between January and July. Italy has suffered maximum loss due to this. Due to the ‘Open Door Policy’ adopted by former German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the last decade, the number of refugees infiltrating Europe has increased significantly. In 2015, a total of 1.5 million refugees had entered Europe.
