China will have to pay the price if it supports Russian attack on Ukraine, warns US NSA Jake Sullivan

Washington: – US National Security Advisor (NSA) warned that China would have to face strategic costs if it supported the Russian attack on Ukraine. A few days ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin had visited China. As per the joint statement published during the visit, China had announced support for Russia on the Ukraine issue and criticised NATO. Besides, it had also said that the United States and NATO should give up their cold war mentality. Against this background, the warning issued by the US NSA becomes significant.

The United States has already warned that an attack on Ukraine will be a blunder on Russia. Moreover, western countries will impose comprehensive and tough sanctions against Russia. US President Joe Biden had stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin would be targeted with sanctions on a personal level. The US NSA has been reminded of this while issuing the warning to China. Sullivan pointed to the dire consequences, saying, ‘If Russia does choose to move forward, not only will it come at a strategic cost to Russia, but if China is seen as having supported it, it will come at some costs to China. China should be mindful of this while dealing with Russia over the next few days.’

Sullivan further warned that the sanctions imposed by the United States and western countries would target the Russian financial systems. China’s connection with the Russian systems will also directly affect the Chinese economy.’ Sullivan also said, ‘China cannot compensate for the financial losses incurred by Russia in the wake of these sanctions and it should remember this.’

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden met German Chancellor Scholz and discussed the Ukraine issue. Chancellor Scholz is currently on a visit to the United States. During the meeting, President Biden once again issued a warning to Russia over the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. Biden said that the Nord Stream 2 would shut permanently if Russia invaded Ukraine. Even in the past, President Biden has indicated to impose sanctions against this fuel pipeline between Russia and Germany.

While the tensions are increasing between Russia and Ukraine, NATO has warned that the military deployments in the eastern European countries will be increased. NATO Chief Jens Stoltenberg had made a statement in this regard. He further claimed that this issue would be discussed in the NATO meeting to be held next week.
