32 killed, more than 150 injured in internal conflict in Libya

In 2011, a coalition of Western countries, including NATO, overthrew the power of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Since then, the country has been in anarchy, with various factions fighting for power. With the support of the United Nations, the group GNU is currently controlling the capital of Tripoli. But this government installed by Western countries has been vehemently opposed by rebel groups in Eastern Libya.

The Libyan National Army, led by its army chief, General Khalifa Haftar, has waged a fierce battle against the UN-recognised government. The group has established its independent government in Eastern Libya and launched a fierce battle to seize the capital, Tripoli. Supporters of Fathi Bashagha, the group’s Prime Minister, had attacked Tripoli on Saturday.

It is said that the conflict, which continued for several hours, ended later in the evening. The armed groups that support the GNU group claimed to have pushed Bashagha’s supporters out of the capital. The United States and Turkey have strongly condemned Saturday’s conflict. Turkey supports the GNU group and has responded that they stand firmly with their Libyan brothers. The US, while condemning the violence, has demanded an immediate ceasefire.

However, analysts warn that the conflict that has flared in the capital Tripoli for the second time in just a month is a sign of a new war. The Atlantic Council analysts claimed that the Haftar group in Libya is gaining strength again and may launch massive attacks in the near future. Attention has also been drawn to the foreign visits made by senior officials of the Haftar group over the last few days.
