Electric Vehicles are creating a peaceful revolution in the country – PM Narendra Modi

Gandhinagar: Electric Vehicles (EVs) have a distinct characteristic of being silent in drive mode. Thus, Prime Minister Modi said EVs create a silent revolution in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India aims to become self-reliant in energy in the next 25 years. The Prime Minister spoke during a program organized in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, on occasion to celebrate 40 years of the Suzuki Company of Japan. The Prime Minister claimed that the success of Maruti-Suzuki is a symbol of the strong partnership between India and Japan. In his speech, the Prime Minister drew attention to the increasing use of EVs. A few years ago, no one thought that the use of electric vehicles would increase to such an extent. But now, the number of two-wheeler or four-wheeler electric vehicles is increasing. It is no longer considered an alternate option, but it is very much a mainstream vehicle. EVs do not cause air and noise pollution. These vehicles are quietly bringing a revolution to the country. The Prime Minister pointed out that in the last eight years, the central government has undertaken systematic efforts to increase EV demand and supply.

Government has an incentive and subsidy for EVs in terms of income tax concessions and easy loan schemes. Auto Manufactures have benefited from the Production Link Incentives (PLI) scheme. Also, the government is making special efforts to increase the production of batteries. The government announced the Battery Swapping Policy in the 2022 budget to make the necessary facilities for electric vehicle charging available around the country. The Prime Minister expressed his belief that this silent revolution will gain momentum in future.

The Prime Minister also pointed out the need to increase the adoption of electric vehicles to achieve the pollution control target set by the country as the country has a goal to be self-reliant in the energy sector in the next 25 years, which has become more prominent due to the large import of fuel at high prices. In the financial year 2021-22, India spent a whopping $119.2 billion on fuel imports which seems to have doubled over previous years.

Given the ongoing geopolitical upheaval, fuel prices are unlikely to come down. Therefore, India, which imports more than 85% of its energy demand, needs to make faster efforts to become self-sufficient. Economists realize that India’s dependence on other countries for energy can hinder India’s future economic progress.

In such a situation, this announcement by Prime Minister Modi regarding self-reliance in the energy sector is getting attention. This will have a huge positive impact on the country’s economy.
