Turkey parliament approves intensification of action in Iraq, Syria

Ankara: – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that additional military deployments would be made in Syria and Iraq to intensify the actions taken there. The Turkish parliament approved this proposal presented by President Erdogan on Tuesday. This will enable President Erdogan to launch attacks in Iraq and Syria for the next two years. But the main opposition party has questioned the fundamental need for this action.

Since 2013, Turkey has invaded its neighbours, forwarding action against the terrorist organisation IS as the reason. The Turkish military has established bases in Syria and Turkey has launched airstrikes in Iraq. Every year the Turkish parliament extends the period of this deployment by another year. But this time, the Turkish parliament announced that the Turkish military would be deployed in Iraq and Syria for the next two years.

Given this decision, the Turkish military will be deployed in Syria and Iraq from 30th October 2021 to 30th October 2023. The Erdogan government has been using military deployment in Syria and Iraq against the Kurdish rebels for the last few years. Turkey has declared Kurdish groups in the neighbouring countries as terrorist organisations. But the United States, Russia and the European countries are opposed to the Turkish actions.

It is claimed that the ruling Justice and Development Party has used its majority in the parliament to get this permission. But Republican People’s Party (CHP), the main opposition party in Turkey, has raised questions regarding the intentions of President Erdogan. As per the leaders of CHP, President Erdogan has not been able to give a satisfactory answer to the question ‘What is the need of this military deployment in the neighbouring countries for two years?’

Not only the Turkish opposition party, but even the European Union is also upset with President Erdogan. The European Commission criticised that the Turkish military stand in Syria and mainly Libya is against the policies of the European Union. Even in the past, European countries and even Russia criticised the Turkish military actions in Syria and Iraq.
