Strong repercussions from around the world on Chinese Hongkong law – 300 protestors arrested in Hongkong

Hongkong: Strong repercussions are being heard from around the world, of the National Security Law imposed by the Chinese government in Hongkong. Protests have started in Hongkong against the law and the security agencies have arrested 300 people. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned that this law is an insult to the international community and the United States will not keep quiet. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced citizenship for the residents of Hongkong and even the Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced a new proposal. At the same time, India also has delivered a tight slap to China, indicating to raise this issue in the United Nations.

Chinese President Xi Jinping signed the National Security Law, prepared for Hongkong, on Tuesday. After that, the law came into force from Wednesday, 1st July. Under this law any action against China will be treated illegal and an act of treason and the law has the provision to hand out a life term in prison, to the perpetrator of the action. The local Hongkong laws will not apply to any Hongkong citizen, arrested under this law. The concerned agencies have been permitted to hold the hearings, under this new law, in secured secret facilities.  

Intense reactions have been received from the international level, including Hongkong. Massive demonstrations were held in the city of Hongkong, on Wednesday, in the morning. The security agencies made liberal use of pellets, water cannons and Pepper sprays, along with lathi Charge, to control the protestors. The agencies informed that 300 people were detained during the protests. Nine people flashing placards of independence of Hongkong and distributing pamphlets were arrested under the new security law.   

Severe repercussions of the Hongkong law were felt even on the international level. US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo issued a fresh warning in harsh words ‘Chinese communist rulers have swallowed Hongkong and this comes as an insult to the International community. The Chinese government should not be under the impression that the United States will keep quiet on this subject.’ British Prime Minister announced that the citizenship proposal is open saying that this new security law is a blatant violation of the joint resolution passed by the United Kingdom and China and the United Kingdom will fulfil the promise given to the residents of Hongkong. As per this proposal, 2.5 million residents of Hongkong can opt for British citizenship.   

Following the United Kingdom, Australia has proposed to give asylum to people who want to leave Hongkong. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison gave this information. A strong reaction has been received from China regarding the offers made by the United Kingdom and Australia. China warned that all the residents of Hongkong are Chinese citizens. Japan, Canada and Taiwan also have expressed deep concern over the new law imposed in Hongkong. India too, taking cognisance of the law, has indicated raising this issue in the United Nations.
