US House speaker Nancy Pelosi visits Armenia in the wake of Armenia-

Washington/Yerevan: Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited Armenia on Sunday. Addressing the Armenian Parliament on occasion, Pelosi alleged that the new conflict was fuelled by the attacks by Azerbaijan, which were illegal and deadly. At the same time, she assured that the United States fully supports the sovereignty of Armenia and is committed to providing the necessary assistance for the security of this country.

Azerbaijan’s military launched an offensive on Armenia on Tuesday night last week. Then there was intense fighting for the next two days on the borders of Armenia and Azerbaijan. After that, the Collective Security Treaty Organization – (CSTO) team, a Russia-sponsored organization, arrived in Armenia. This organization includes Armenia. There were indications that if Azerbaijan does not stop the conflict, the army of the CSTO member countries may enter Armenia. After this warning, the conflict was stopped with the mediation of Russia.

After the cease-fire, both countries released information on military casualties. According to this, 77 soldiers of Azerbaijan were killed and 282 soldiers were injured. While 135 Armenian soldiers were killed, the number of injured has not been disclosed. Russia’s stance in the wake of the conflict against Azerbaijan has sparked outrage in Armenia. Against the backdrop of this displeasure, the visit of the US speaker along with a delegation to Armenia is noteworthy.

During her visit, Pelosi visited the Armenian Parliament and the US Embassy. In her speech to the Parliament of Armenia, she strongly criticized Azerbaijan. She also alleged that Azerbaijan’s attacks were responsible for the new conflict, claiming that this has been noted. Pelosi confirmed that the United States strongly condemns Azerbaijan’s actions and that the United States supports Armenia’s sovereignty. At the same time, she assured that the United States is in talks with the Armenian leadership and will take the initiative to meet their defence needs.

While mentioning the cooperation between Armenia and Russia, she also stated that Armenia did not get the expected cooperation from Russia in the conflict this time. Pelosi also said that the United States would definitely give priority to the survival of democracy in Armenia. Armenia is known as a country under Russian influence. In 2018, there was a change of power in this country through the ‘Velvet Revolution’. After that, significant conflicts broke out three times between Armenia and Azerbaijan and it is being claimed that Russian influence on this country is decreasing.
