China protects Lashkar handler Sajid Mir from action at UN

United Nations: China has blocked the proposal to declare another Pakistani terrorist as an ‘international terrorist’. The UN Security Council had proposed to declare Sajid Mir, one of the masterminds of 26/11 and the notorious Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist who plotted terror attacks in the US, France and Australia, as an ‘international terrorist’. China opposed the proposal by India and the United States, citing technical reasons. This is not the first time that China has obstructed such a proposal in the United Nations, but earlier as well, China has blocked such proposals and favoured Pakistan several times. China has prevented three similar proposals against Pakistani terrorists in the last four months alone.

Mir was the handler of the terrorists who came to India to carry out the attack. He played a key role in the preparation of this attack. He has carried out many deadly activities in the past. However, after the 26/11 terror attacks, pressure had increased on Pakistan to take action against Mir. The United States declared Mir an international terrorist in 2012. Then Mir suddenly disappeared. He was declared dead by Pakistan. But the Indian agencies were claiming that Sajid was alive.

Although Pakistan pretended India’s most wanted terrorist to be dead to save him, in June this year, Pakistan finally exposed Sajid Mir in an attempt to get out of the grey list of the Financial Action Tax Force (FATF). Admitting that he was alive, his arrest was also shown. He was also sentenced to 15 years in prison by a Pakistan anti-terrorism court for funding terrorists. But the efforts of Pakistan and China to prevent Sajid Mir, who is currently in Pakistan’s jail, from being declared an international terrorist raises many questions. The question is being raised whether Mir is actually in prison in Pakistan or has been given a safe house under the guise of this sentence to save him. US agencies have placed a reward of $5 million on Mir’s head. There have been allegations that China is shielding such a terrorist at the behest of Pakistan.

This is not the first time China has created obstacles to delay United Nations’ action against notorious terrorists. China has also blocked action against Lashkar chief Hafiz Saeed and Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Maulana Masood Azhar several times. However, after growing pressure and criticism at the international level, China removed the obstacle in action against these two. Apart from these two, China has repeatedly opposed action against several terrorist organisations and terrorists.

Last month, China also blocked the United Nations resolution against Abdul Rauf Azhar, the brother of Jaish-e-Mohammed chief and most wanted terrorist Masood Azhar. In June, China also blocked the action against Rehman Makki, the brother of Lashkar leader Hafiz Saeed.
