Azerbaijan military claims to have gained control of Karabakh hills, reaction

Baku/Moscow/Washington: Three soldiers were killed in the fierce conflict between the armies of Armenia and Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Azerbaijan claims to have gained control over some Karabakh hills during the conflict. Azerbaijan also accused the Armenian military of violating the ceasefire. Russia expressed concern over the conflict sparked between the countries that were a part of the Soviet Union and accused Azerbaijan of being responsible for the conflict. The United States appealed to both countries to maintain peace.

The conflict had been sparked between Armenia and Azerbaijan after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. At that time, Armenia had taken control of the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which was a part of Azerbaijan. For the last 30 years, since then, this has been known as a disputed territory. A conflict was sparked in 2020 between Armenia and Azerbaijan for the control over this disputed region. Azerbaijan overpowered Armenia with the support of Turkey and Pakistan’s militaries. Russia tried to resolve the dispute by working out a ceasefire.

But since the last few weeks, the region had once again created tension. Three people were killed in the conflict that was sparked in the Nagorno-Karabakh region between the two countries on Wednesday. As per information, two of these are Armenian soldiers. 14 Armenian soldiers have been injured in the conflict. Azerbaijan claimed to have wrested control of some of the hills from the Armenian army. The Azerbaijan defence ministry also accused Armenia of violating the ceasefire.

But the Russian defence ministry accused that Azerbaijan violated the two years old ceasefire and launching an attack on this region. Russia criticised that the Azeri military is entirely responsible for the conflict on the Sariyaba hills. Meanwhile, as per the Russian media, this Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict could increase the concerns for the country as Russia is already entangled in the Ukraine conflict.
