Like UK, Germany can also exit the European Union

Berlin/London – ‘The UK’s decision to exit the European Union was absolutely right. Germany can also take a similar decision in future,’ a sensational claim by a senior leader of ‘Alternative for Germany (AfD)’. Speaking on the issue of EU reform in an interview with the UK newspaper ‘Financial Times’, Alice Weidel, co-chair of Alternative for Germany, presented the idea of ’Dexit’ as a ‘Deutsche exit’. Farmers have been protesting in Germany for the past few days, and there is a sentiment of intense resentment against the ruling coalition with Chancellor Scholz. The emergence of such a claim against this background is attracting much attention.

The UK had taken the initiative to exit the EU by putting forward the issues of scrutiny rules and economic inequality in the European Union. In a referendum held in 2016, 51.9 percent of voters approved leaving the EU. After that, in 2020, following four years of negotiations, it was announced that the UK would officially withdraw from the EU. This incident had major consequences on European as well as international politics.

On the background of Brexit, aggressive political demonstrations started in various member countries of the European Union on the issue of ‘Exit’. A picture of right-wing ideological groups organizing massive protests on the issue of exit from the EU also emerged. In countries like Italy, Poland, Austria, and Hungary, groups that have taken up discussions on exiting from the EU are still active. Against this background, the demands raised by ‘Alternative for Germany’ (AfD), one of Germany’s top political parties, assume much importance.

‘AfD’ had earlier succeeded in gaining political space in Germany by raising the issue of refugees. In the last few years, the support this party has received in various elections in Germany appears to have increased. In some provinces and cities, this group seems to have secured second place. ‘AFD’ is also trying to expand its footprint by joining the farmers’ protests in Germany for the last few days.

The issue of taking an ‘exit’ from the EU is also believed to possibly be a part of an attempt to increase the support the party is receiving. ‘If the AfD forms a government in Germany in the future, efforts will be made to reform the European Union. As a result, the powers enjoyed by the European Commission will be reduced. If this attempt fails, the German people will be given the option of a referendum like the people of Britain, said AfD co-chairwoman Alice Weidel.
