Ebola epidemic claims 30 lives in Uganda

Kampala: The extent of the Ebola epidemic seems to be increasing in the east African country of Uganda. Despite the lockdown imposed in the two districts where the Ebola epidemic started two weeks ago, Ebola cases are being reported from other parts of the country. As per the information given by the Uganda government on Wednesday, 30 people have died in the epidemic and the number of cases has crossed 100. This is the sixth Ebola epidemic in the country in the last two decades.

Ebola epidemic claims 30 lives in UgandaOn the 19th of last month, a 24-year-old youth died of Ebola in the Mubende district in central Uganda. It was revealed that the Sudan Ebolavirus strain was responsible for the youth’s death. Sudan Ebolavirus is one of the six strains of Ebola and the mortality is 40% in these cases. After the first death on 19th September, Ebola cases emerged from three districts within one week. The number of Ebola cases reached 60 in the next few days and as per received information, 25 people have died.

The alarmed Uganda government imposed a lockdown in some areas of the country on 15th October. Although the number of casualties went down, there is a consistent increase in the number of cases. Per the information shared on Wednesday, 109 Ebola cases and 30 people have died. But sources have claimed that the number of casualties is much more. Earlier, there was a major Ebola epidemic in DR Congo, Africa, between 2018 and 2020. Nearly 3,500 people contracted Ebola during the epidemic. More than 2,000 people died. The Ebola epidemic has hit DR Congo 13 times. Whereas there have been five Ebola epidemics in Uganda in the last two decades, the current outbreak is claimed to be the sixth.
