PM Modi holds talks with British Prime Minister Sunak

New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held telephonic talks with the newly elected British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Prime Minister Modi expressed a resolve to strengthen further the comprehensive strategic partnership between India and the United Kingdom. Both leaders expressed willingness to finalise the free trade agreement between the two countries soon. British Commerce Minister Greg Hands claimed that the free trade agreement between India and the United Kingdom would soon be finalised, saying that the negotiations are almost complete.

PM Modi holds talks with British Prime Minister SunakMoreover, reports of Prime Minister Modi and new British Prime Minister Sunak holding telephonic conversations on Thursday have been received. Prime Minister Modi and British Prime Minister Sunak shared information regarding the discussions on social media. Prime Minister Modi congratulated Prime Minister Sunak and said he was keen on watching the heights of cooperation between the two great democracies. Prime Minister Modi also assured during the talks that he will be working with Prime Minister Sunak further to strengthen the comprehensive strategic cooperation between the two countries. Saying that he participated in the talks for India-UK free trade agreement, Prime Minister Sunak claimed that the deal would be in place soon.

Meanwhile, the agreement had taken a backseat during the tenure of the former British Prime Minister, Liz Truss. The agreement process has come to a halt, given the statements made by British Home Secretary Suella Braverman. Braverman subsequently withdrew her statements. Still, India did not change the stance adopted against her.

Against this background, Liz Truss resigned as the Prime Minister and Rishi Sunak took over as the Prime Minister. Sunak had said that the previous government had committed some mistakes and he had taken over to rectify them. Sunak also announced that special importance would be attached to relations with Indians. Based on the statements made by Sunak, confidence is being expressed that the ties between India and the United Kingdom will strengthen further on all fronts in the coming times.

The new British Commerce Minister, Greg Hands, claimed that negotiations for the free trade agreement between the two countries had been almost completed and the deal would be signed soon. British Foreign Minister James Cleverly is coming on a visit to India on Thursday. This visit will benefit the free trade agreement and strengthen India-UK relations on other fronts.
