The rebel group ‘Arab Janjaweed’ launched attacks on the nearby villages of the locals. Houses and properties in nearly 20 villages were torched in these attacks. More than 60 dead bodies were recovered from the burnt houses and properties.

Many have been critically injured and there is a strong possibility of rising casualties. Local leaders informed that the attackers had taken control of the water sources and certain other areas. Following the violence, the military was deployed in the Kulbus and surrounding regions. But the locals and volunteer organisations are demanding the deployment of Joint Neutral Forces in the region. The violence that flared up in the villages in the Krenik region in west Darfur in April had claimed 168 lives. ethnic violenceThe incidence of violence is seen to be increasing in the Darfur region over the last two years. It is claimed that these incidences of ethnic conflict and violence are similar to the conflict in the year 2003.

In 2003, a major conflict was sparked between the Arabs and the local Africans over water, land and agriculture. Dictator Omar Bashir ruled Sudan at that time. Bashir supported the Arab groups and started a massacre of the local Africans. The military overthrew the Bashir government and took over the government in 2020.

The United Nations deployed peacekeeping forces in 2007 to stop the violence in Darfur. But this did not have much effect on the violence. ethnic violenceInstead, incidents of attacks on the peacekeeping force were reported. The fierce conflict lasted for nearly 15 years. More than 300,000 people were killed and more than 2.5 million were forced to migrate.

The peacekeeping force’s tenure ended at the end of 2020 and the Sudanese military has been deployed in these regions. But the military has failed to establish peace in the region. The hand of Arab Janjaweed in the current violence rings warning bells for the Sudanese military government. It is believed that the Arab Janjaweed enjoys support from certain countries. Therefore, analysts are expressing a concern that these groups and the violence perpetrated by them can become a cause for destabilising Sudan.
