China questioned by 47 countries over atrocities against Uyghurs

Geneva: 47 countries have united to question the Chinese regime on the oppression and atrocities on the Uyghur community in the Xinjiang province of China. They have told the United Nations that they have credible evidence of China committing inhuman atrocities on the Uyghur Minority. These countries also demanded that the human rights organisation publish a report on Uyghur’s repression. So many countries uniting over the Uyghur community has made the Chinese restless. China claims that these accusations are politically motivated.

A joint statement against China was presented in the meeting of the human rights organisations of the United Nations in Geneva on Tuesday. Paul Bakers, the Dutch Ambassador to the United Nations, read out the statement on behalf of 47 countries. Bakers said that all the countries have grave concerns over the human rights issue in the Xinjiang province. Bakers said there was strong evidence of China unjustifiably imprisoning about 1 million of the Uyghurs population. A few months back, China said that the Uyghurs were kept in the camp for professional training and counter-terrorism.

Moreover, the joint statement accused China of quashing the human rights of these Uyghurs and minorities and even spying on them. Bakers expressed a concern that the Uyghurs are also being sexually exploited. Children are separated from their parents and the wives from their husbands. Bakers reminded that China blocked UN observers from carrying out any investigation.

Michelle Bachelet, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, visited Xinjiang in the last month. However, not publishing the report under Chinese pressure is being criticised now. The joint statement submitted by the 47 countries demanded that the United Nations publish this report regarding atrocities against Uyghurs and other minorities in China at the earliest.

Meanwhile, China has become more restless given this joint statement. Chinese Ambassador Shen Shu accused the Netherlands and other countries of running a malicious campaign against China.
