Clashes between Iranian soldiers and Taliban near Afghan border

Kabul/Tehran: Clashes between the Iranian soldiers and Taliban along the border in the Nimruz province of Afghanistan have been reported. Previously, about one and half months back, similar clashes occurred on the Afghan border. Iran’s foreign ministry has appealed to the Taliban to get serious regarding the escalating tensions on the border.

Clashes between Iranian soldiers and Taliban near Afghan borderThe situation remains quite tense on the border between the Nimruz province of Afghanistan and the Sistan-Baluchestan province in Iran. Officials from both sides claim that illegal trafficking and smuggling are rampant through the border. Both the countries have also accused each other of terrorism across the border. Against this background, incidents of cross-firing are commonly seen on the border.

Videos of firing during a clash two days back between the Taliban and Iranian soldiers were released. A few hours after the clash, the Taliban and the Iranian soldiers held talks to end the conflict. Local media claimed that the conflict was sparked over a misunderstanding.

Three conflicts have been reported from the Afghan-Iran border in the month of June, killing Iranian and Taliban soldiers. Senior officials from both countries held talks after the clashes.
