China's authoritarianism poses biggest threat to global democracy - Lord Alton, UK's influential politicianThere have been reports that the Chinese Communist regime has been excessively atrocious to Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang. To answer these accusations, the Chinese government sent a team loyal to the regime to inspect the situation in Xinjiang. This squad, honest to the Communist regime, had given a clean chit to the regime of President Xi Jinping. There was worldwide criticism of the report published by the Chinese government. Despite this, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had not reacted in strong terms against China.

UK’s senior parliamentary leader Lord David Alton expressed anger at Prime Minister Sunak’s barren reaction to China. Alton highlighted that China was not only a challenge to the democratic system but also the biggest threat. At the same time, Alton also reprimanded that the UK should reduce its dependence on China. Alton warned that UK’s trade deficit with China had reached a staggering 40 billion pounds and that dependence on China would not be affordable for the UK in future. Alton cites the position of Germany, which is dependent on Russian fuel in the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

At the same time, the United Kingdom should not ignore the massacre of the Uyghur race brought about by the Chinese regime. China’s then President Deng had promised to implement a ‘One country, two systems’ policy towards Hong Kong. But Alton expressed concern that Jinping’s regime has seized Hong Kong’s independence, and the same could happen to Taiwan, which had never been part of China earlier. Alton drew attention to the fact that the President of China had threatened to annex Taiwan through military action. Therefore, Alton has warned that there was a need to look at the activities of the Chinese Communist regime with eyes open.

Developed countries have been so far ignoring the human rights slaughter by China. Due to trade concessions and benefits from China, developed countries were not ready to oppose China by raising the issue of human rights and expansionist policies. But now, there has been a threat to the democracy of the developed countries from China. Representatives of developed countries have begun struggling to protect their systems. Alton’s warning to his homeland against China has been a part of this struggle.
