Would go to war with China for Taiwan, however, will not leave the ‘One China’ policy – Conflicting statements from US President Biden and the White House

Washington: US President Joe Biden announced during an interview that the US military would defend Taiwan if there were a surprise attack on Taiwan. After that, reports were published that the US-China conflict over Taiwan would begin. However, the White House summed up Biden’s statement after China’s strong reaction to this. The White House had to disclose that the US is committed to the ‘One China’ Policy, and there has been no change. Just a few days ago, the US Senate announced billions of dollars in military aid for Taiwan. According to this, the US will supply Taiwan with anti-ship and air-to-air missiles. The Pentagon justified this military assistance by highlighting the threat to Taiwan from China. Around this time, while talking to an American news channel, a senior CIA officer claimed that China would try to take over Taiwan in 2027.

China has imposed such sanctions on the US for the second time in the last two months. China had taken action against Nancy Pelosi, who visited Taiwan, by imposing sanctions. Due to this, US-China relations seemed to be more stressful.

In such a situation, President Biden made a new announcement about Taiwan in an interview with an American news channel. A journalist asked President Biden whether the US military would enter into a conflict against China to defend Taiwan if a surprise attack was launched on Taiwan. On this, the President of the United States responded, ‘Yes, if, in fact, there was an unprecedented attack.’ The journalist further asked if US soldiers would defend Taiwan, unlike Ukraine. Biden again answered ‘Yes.’

Taking serious note of this, the Chinese Foreign Ministry reminded the US of the ‘One China’ policy. The US President’s statements violate the ‘One China’ policy and the three rules regarding Taiwan, criticised Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning. Furthermore, China has also warned that this would affect US-China relations. After this, the White House said that Biden’s statements were distorted and noted that the US is committed to the ‘One China’ policy.

Meanwhile, while visiting Japan in May, Biden announced going to war against China for Taiwan. The White House had summed up and had to make disclosures on it even then. After that, the former Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, criticised Biden’s policy towards Taiwan as ambiguous. Abe had warned that the US should not repeat the mistake made in Ukraine regarding Taiwan.
