Washington/London/Taipei: Leaders, officials and analysts from various countries, including Taiwan, have claimed that the threat posed by China to Taiwan has increased in the wake of the Ukraine conflict. Consequently, the Biden administration in the United States has initiated steps to protect Taiwan. This includes developing a comprehensive policy that brings together allies from Europe and the Indo-Pacific. The United States has reportedly held a high-level, secret meeting with Great Britain as part of this.

China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) consistently holds defence exercises near Taiwan. At the same time, Chinese aircraft have increased their incursions into Taiwan’s airspace. Leaders, officials and the media in the Chinese ruling regime call for an attack on Taiwan, considering the outcome and consequences of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In light of these moves, the United States has initiated steps to secure Taiwan, signalling the formation of an alliance with its partner countries.

In March, a secret meeting was held with Great Britain, an ally of the United States. The meeting was attended by Kurt Campbell, a senior White House official from the United States, and Laura Rosenberger, a member of the National Security Council. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office and senior members of the Security Council were in attendance. The leading British daily, the Financial Times, has published the news.

At the same time, the issue of enhancing UK-Taiwan cooperation was also discussed. Last year, Great Britain sent its aircraft carrier HMS Elizabeth to the Indo-Pacific region. The aircraft carrier had sailed near Taiwan’s territorial waters. It is said that increasing the presence of British warships in the Indo-Pacific was also discussed during the meeting. The United States has discussed the possibility of Great Britain joining the front formed in the Indo-Pacific to stop China.

Meanwhile, the United States has convened a separate meeting of Pacific Island nations to counter Chinese actions in the Indo-Pacific. Senior White House official Kurt Campbell said that the meeting would be held later this year.
