Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan has claimed that the Taliban regime liberated Afghanistan from US slavery. Saying that accepting the culture of another country is tantamount to acknowledging that the country is superior to him, Imran Khan made a bizarre claim that the cruel and violent regime of the Taliban is the true culture of Afghanistan. His claim could provoke strong reactions from the international community. Even Pakistani intellectuals have long been critical of Imran Khan’s stance on the Taliban.

Qureshi also expressed satisfaction that the international community would now have to negotiate with the Taliban regime in Kabul. Pakistan believes that only negotiations can solve the problem. Qureshi tried to push his country’s agenda, saying that Pakistan could play a vital role in future talks between the international community and the Taliban regime.

Pakistan’s stance on the Taliban regime will invite strong criticism on the international level. It could also lead to sanctions on Pakistan, some analysts in the country had warned. Liberals, as well as women’s rights activists in the country, have expressed concern that Pakistan is hurting itself by getting involved in the situation in Afghanistan.
