Shootout at Azerbaijan embassy in Iran – Security chief slain

Tehran/ Baku: An attacker entered the embassy of Azerbaijan in Tehran, the capital of Iran, and opened fire. The security chief was killed and two security personnel were injured. Relations between Iran and Azerbaijan have already been strained. It is claimed that the incident may increase the tension between the two neighbouring countries.

After entering the embassy, the attacker pulled out a Kalashnikov rifle and opened fire. In this, the security chief of the embassy was killed on the spot. The soldiers posted at the headquarters for the embassy security were injured in the firing. Iran has strongly condemned the attack. Also, the police chief of Iran informed that the attacker has been arrested and is being investigated.

The attack is a further escalation of tensions between Iran and Azerbaijan. There are major differences between Turkish-speaking Azerbaijan and Iran. Azerbaijan in Central Asia has military support from Turkey as well as Israel. Iran has friendly relations with Azerbaijan’s enemy, Armenia. The repercussions of this tension are occasionally seen on the border between Iran and Azerbaijan. Meanwhile, Iran had earlier accused Azerbaijan of trying to ignite a civil war in Iran by creating discontent among millions of Azeri speakers in Iran.
