Russia’s UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) membership suspended after United Nations passes resolution

Moscow/ New York: Russia declared terminating its UNHRC membership after a resolution was passed in the UN General Assembly on Thursday. About 93 members voted for the suspension of Russia’s membership when the United States tabled a resolution on Thursday. This action has been taken against Russia, given the massacre in the Bucha region near the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. However, Russia has alleged that this action has been taken with a political motive and other member nations have been pressured into accepting this decision.

A few days ago, it was revealed that a big massacre had happened at Bucha near the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. Nearly 400 people lost their lives in this massacre. Besides, Ukraine and the West have alleged that Russian forces carried out the massacre. However, the Russian government has dismissed these allegations and countered that Ukraine had made it all up. Some countries have also demanded an independent and non-biased investigation.

However, the United States and European nations proposed to expel Russia from the UN Human Rights Council against this background. On Thursday, the United States took the lead and tabled this proposal at the UN General Assembly. At the time, 93 members had voted to suspend Russia, 24 nations had voted against it, while 58 countries abstained from voting. Thus, after this resolution, Russia declared to terminate its membership.

Furthermore, the Russian foreign ministry has accused the resolution passed on Thursday as motivated by political agenda and called it illegal. Russia has also alleged that some nations have been pressured to vote against Russia. Pro-Russia nation Serbia has voted against Russia and has confessed to having done that, fearing sanctions.
