It has been more than a month since Russia launched the attack on Ukraine. During this time, the United States and its European allies have imposed stringent sanctions against Russia. Russia also has initiated steps to counter the sanctions. The effects are becoming apparent on the international level and the prices of fuel, energy, food grain, metals and many other commodities have sky-rocketed. Against this background, the warning issued by the former British official becomes significant. Jonathan Shaw has served as the joint chief of British defence forces. Therefore, his remarks regarding the stand of the western countries become noteworthy. Shaw said ‘The western people see the humanitarian crisis and sufferings of the Ukrainian population. This is good to see on the television. But one should be aware that the reality is much harsher.’

Shaw pointed out ‘The western leadership including the United Kingdom have not made the population aware of the real aftermath of the Ukraine war. The conflict against Russia can be a prolonged one and the lifestyle of the western population can be greatly affected in the process. The population may have to suffer for a long period. They need to be mentally prepared for this.’ He also pointed out that the lifestyle of the western population is mainly dependent on cheap fuel and other products coming from Russia.

Meanwhile, former Russian President and current Vice President of the Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, has retorted that believing that the sanctions imposed against the Russian industry and billionaires will affect the ruling Russian government is foolish. There is no possibility of discontent rising against the government. He claimed that this would instead increase the unity in the population. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has already warned that the sanctions imposed by the western countries are nothing but a ‘Hybrid War’ declared against Russia.
