Russia-Israel Diplomatic Row Escalates

Moscow: Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that if Israel is being sympathetic toward Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky for his Jewish origin, then Hitler also had Jewish blood. This comment from Russia is in reaction to Israel’s decision to provide military assistance to Ukraine. The statement of Russia’s Foreign Minster indicates that people of Jewish origins committed genocide of Jews. The Israeli government has demanded an apology for this statement. However, it seems the comments of the Russian Foreign minister have escalated the diplomatic row between the two countries.

Russia-Israel Diplomatic Row EscalatesMoreover, Russia has accused Israel of supporting President Zelensky’s ‘Neo-Nazi’ regime in Ukraine. Russian foreign ministry has criticized the Israeli leaders for forgetting their past. Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid has condemned the statement of Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, calling it reprehensible. Russia has responded with harsh comments. Russian Foreign Ministry said that since Zelensky is of Jewish origin, it cannot be said with certainty that Ukraine was not in the hands of the Nazis regime.

Russia launched an attack on Ukraine in the last week of February. Subsequently, the United States and European countries have imposed tough sanctions on Russia. At the same time, there were plans to provide military assistance to Ukraine. Israel, an ally of the United States and European countries, has criticized the conflict in Ukraine. But it has refrained from taking a stand against Russia to maintain its relations with Russia. Israel had asserted to not provide ammunition support to Ukraine, despite the push from the United States and European countries.

But in the last ten days, there are signs to suggest a change in the stand of Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett regarding Russia. One week ago, Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid accused Russia of committing war crimes in Ukraine. Later, the presence of Israeli representatives was reported in a meeting convened by US President Joe Biden to provide military assistance to Ukraine. Israeli media have reported Israel’s preparedness to send military aid to Ukraine.

It is also claimed that Israel is taking the initiative to supply fuel to European countries affected by the Ukraine conflict. According to Iranian media, Israel and Turkey are preparing to supply fuel to Europe through a pipeline in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region. To prevent Israel’s activities, Iran has targeted an oil project and an affiliated businessman’s home in Kurdistan with rockets in the last month.

Against this backdrop, Russia has sharply criticized Israel. Russia has stated that its attack on Ukraine was part of an ongoing effort to free the country from the clutches of the Nazi regime. Israel’s stand against this is like ‘turning their back on history.’ Russian foreign ministry statements have raised questions about Israel’s policies.
