Budapest/Belgrade/Moscow: – Pro-Russia leaders have won the elections held in Hungary and Serbia in the European continent. Viktor Orban of the Fidesz party will be taking over as the Prime Minister of Hungary for the fourth successive term. Whereas Aleksandar Vucic will be the President of Serbia for the second consecutive term. The United States and its European allies have taken an aggressive stand against Russia, given the Ukraine war. The European Union and NATO are trying to demonstrate unity on the issue and portray a picture that the attack on Ukraine is an attack on European values and democracy. The Union and NATO have imposed stringent sanctions against Russia, siding with Ukraine, and withdrawn from cooperation in many sectors. But the differences among the European Union members have been exposed in the last few days. Against the background of these differences, the elections in both Hungary and Serbia become significant. Hungary is a member of both the European Union and NATO. Serbia has applied for the Union membership and has firmly opposed NATO. But being European countries, both these countries are considered important for both the Union and NATO. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been in power since 2010. Besides, he has succeeded in tightening his grip more and more on the country. He has adopted a stand to cooperate with Russia and China in the process.

Against the background of the Ukraine war, the position of the two countries is a challenge for both the Union and NATO. Therefore, once the elections were announced in Hungary, the US and European media highlighted the reports of opposition faced by Orban in Hungary. Some analysts and think tanks had even predicted defeat for him. But jolting the US and European opponents, Orban claimed easy victory with more than 53% votes. Orban retorted after his win, ‘My victory must be visible to people residing on the moon and in Brussels.’

Serbian President Alexander Vucic is also known to be a Russia supporter leader. He has been seeking cooperation from Russia on issues like fuel pipeline, relations with NATO and military assistance.
