A few days ago, both the United States and the United Kingdom, including NATO, warned Russia over the Ukraine issue. The United States has said in a statement that it has ‘all options available’ against the Russian actions on the Ukraine border. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom has warned that Russia will have to pay a heavy price if President Putin makes a mistake in invading Ukraine. NATO, too, has warned of severe consequences. Against this backdrop, Russia has now made a direct statement about the war.

Russia’s ambassador to Britain, Andrei Kelin, issued a serious threat, ‘There is a danger of war on the Russia-Ukraine border. NATO‘s deployment near the Russian border is increasing. Military movements in the Baltic Sea also appear to have gained momentum. Nuclear-armed planes are flying just 20 kilometres from the Russian border. Against this backdrop, a spark is likely to explode and turn into a conflict.’ Kelin also noted that other NATO countries, including the United Kingdom, are moving closer to the Russian border.

Russian think tank Valdai Club has also said that the possibility of a Russia-Ukraine conflict has increased. The article, titled ‘War Between Russia and Ukraine: Basic Scenario’, claims about an attack launched by Russia. It says Russia does not want the current ‘status quo’ with Ukraine right now. There is resentment in the Russian political circles that Ukraine is violating the Minsk agreement and pursuing an aggressive anti-Russian policy. At the same time, Ukraine is pushing for NATO membership and is receiving significant defence cooperation from the Westerners. It is feared that this could lead to the establishment of Western bases in Ukraine. Russia will launch decisive attacks on Ukraine to prevent this, the Russian think tank said.

Meanwhile, British MP Alan West has also predicted the possibility of a Russia-Ukraine conflict. He warned that Russia could resort to nuclear war if it feared losing the conventional war, citing Putin’s character. Ukrainian foreign minister has also claimed that Russia has amassed more than a million troops near the border and warned that Russia could launch an attack even before the westerners can blink.
