NATO faces internal rift over anti-Russia campaign as member nations France & Hungary refuse to arm Ukraine

Budapest: Ukraine’s arsenal has largely been destroyed in the anti-Russia conflict. Consequently, the US and NATO have instructed NATO member states to provide Ukraine with combat aircraft, air safety equipment and other weapons. But member states France and Hungary have opposed arming Ukraine. ‘Arming Ukraine with battlefields and fighter planes would be to douse the fire,’ warned France. Besides, Ukraine has claimed that it would get drawn into the war offered with such an arsenal. This seems to have created a rift within NATO over the Russian-Ukraine conflict.

Moreover, according to the report by the leading US daily, Bloomberg, France has refused to arm Ukraine. The American daily published the information about a French official’s arrival. A few days ago, Hungarian President Viktor Orban had accepted the same position. President Orban was against arming Ukraine, claiming that the Russia-Ukraine conflict should not reach Hungary. All the more, Orban also questioned the stance of the United States and NATO. He said arming Ukraine would result in drawing Russian strikes.

Following that, President Orban got criticised by European countries. The Polish and Czech democrats had also refrained from attending the meeting of the Defence Minister in Hungary. As a result, it was revealed that there were differences among NATO member countries over the War of Ukraine. At the same time, some NATO member states objected to Russia’s restrictions. As per reports, Germany had also opposed the harsh sanctions against Russia.

Furthermore, Bloomberg claimed that French President Macron and German Chancellor Scholz were in touch with Russian President Vladimir Putin for peace talks. But the daily also said that some countries in NATO rejected peace talks with Russia. Bloomberg said that these peace talks would benefit Russia while stating that some NATO member states are opposing the efforts of France and Germany.
