OIC meeting escalates Pakistan-Saudi tensions

Islamabad: – Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan has claimed that a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which brings together Arab-Islamic countries around the world, was convened successfully. The Pakistani government claimed the UN has announced assistance for Afghanistan given the meeting. The criticism against the failure of this meeting has come from within Pakistan itself. An international study group claimed that the meeting has raised tensions between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

Last week, Pakistan hosted an OIC meeting in the capital Islamabad. Pakistan had informed the OIC headquarters in Saudi Arabia that a call for Afghanistan to be saved from the humanitarian crisis will be made through this meeting. Apart from this, Pakistan had agreed not to touch on any other issues.

But Saudi Arabia is angry that Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan and Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi addressed OIC member states beyond the planned issue, according to the study group ‘Policy Research Group Strategic Insight’. Saudi Arabia expects to put pressure on the Taliban, saying it should fulfil its responsibility to bring peace and stability to Afghanistan. The information was conveyed to Pakistan through OIC.

But the study group says the Pakistani Prime Minister has angered Saudi Arabia by calling for the Taliban to be recognized at the meeting. He also blamed the international community for rejecting the Taliban and the US blocking nearly $10 billion in funding for Afghanistan. According to the study group, Saudi Arabia does not agree with Pakistan’s allegations.

Meanwhile, Central Asian countries bordering Afghanistan had urged their Foreign Ministers to attend the meeting on Afghanistan hosted by India without giving special importance to the OIC meeting. Opposition leaders have criticized the failure of Prime Minister Imran Khan to make the OIC a success and said it was a shame for Pakistan.
