‘Economic NATO’ required to counter China – Former British Prime Minister, Liz Truss

'Economic NATO'Taipei: Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss is on a five-day visit to Taiwan. Even though her visit has drawn criticism from China, Truce has made a terrific proposal to counter China. If a conflict between China and Taiwan breaks out, the whole world will suffer a huge economic blow. Hence, Truss has asserted that an ‘Economic NATO’ against China is required to avert such a loss. Besides, Truss has left China unsettled by presenting the concept of ‘Economic NATO’ – a strong economic organisation with the participation of Western countries along the lines of NATO.

Moreover, military cooperation with other countries is needed to counter the aggressive activities of China against Taiwan, and to establish peace in the South China Sea region. The importance of this military cooperation cannot be denied in any situation. But if the conflict breaks out between China and Taiwan, the economic consequences for the world will be tremendous, Liz Truss said. Simultaneously, the former British Prime Minister introduced the concept of Economic NATO as well.

Furthermore, Liz Truss has warned the West that there is no point in cooperating with a country like China on serious issues such as climate change. This is because China never discloses the truth and this country is not transparent – the world has realised this fact after the Coronavirus pandemic, said Truss and raised a question on the credibility of China. Truss has warned that the West should be careful while cooperating with such a country.

Meanwhile, China has reacted strongly to Truss’ statements. China has criticised Liz Truss as a failed politician. A spokesman for China’s embassy in the United Kingdom accused Truss of being a failed politician, and his comments were highly provocative. Along with this, the spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy has warned the United Kingdom over Truss’ statements.

The statements made by Truss go against the ‘One China Policy’, i.e. the policy which recognises Taiwan as a part of China. The spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy has warned that those statements may affect China’s relations with the United Kingdom.

While on the one hand, Truss is being ridiculed as a failed politician, China is threatening that her statements could adversely affect bilateral relations with the United Kingdom. Thus, China seems to be taking these statements of Liz Truss seriously. All the more, as per the indications, the concept of ‘Economic NATO’ has shocked China.
