Jerusalem / Tripoli – A plane belonging to Libyan rebel leader Khalifa Haftar reportedly travelled to Israel via Cyprus. This has sparked reports that the Libyan rebel leader has met Israeli leaders. A few days ago, it was reported that the interim Prime Minister of Libya, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, had met with the head of the Israeli intelligence service in Jordan. Against this backdrop, the visit of the Libyan ruling and opposition leaders to Israel is noteworthy.
Libya‘s former dictator Muammar Gaddafi’s regime was bitterly anti-Israel. Gaddafi had also sent troops to fight in the war against Israel. But there are indications that both the current Libyan government and opposition groups are trying to reconcile with Israel. Earlier, a spokesman for Libyan rebel leader General Haftar said efforts would establish cooperation with Israel.
Moreover, it was reported in November that Saddam, the son of General Haftar and the second-in-command of the rebel group in Libya, had also paid a secret visit to Israel.
