Taiwan seeks to join the US Indo-pacific economic framework

Washington/Taipei – The Taiwanese government announced that they seek to join the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework announced by US President Joe Biden. It is said that the United States has proposed this framework to counter China’s Belt and Road initiative and aggressive expansionist activities. Meanwhile, it is reported that a US nuclear submarine moved towards a US naval base near Taiwan.

Taiwan, Indo-Pacific, US, China, Belt and Road Initiative,The United States has begun to increase its influence in the Indo-Pacific region to counter the Chinese aggression in the region. Increasing cooperation with Taiwan, consistent military deployments and exercises and QUAD are a part of the action plan. Additionally, the United States has proposed a new Indo-Pacific Economic Framework that will be in place this year. US allies like India, Japan, Australia are a part of the framework and there are efforts to include the ASEAN member countries. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other senior US officials visited the countries Indo-Pacific region to assess the response.

Taiwan also is making efforts to create an economic front against China by seeking to be part of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework. Before this, Taiwan has also applied for participation in the CPTTP trade agreement in the pacific region. The inclusion of Taiwan in this and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework will be a major jolt for China. China has coerced many countries to use its trade and economic power in its favour. Taiwan’s increasing participation will be a setback to China.

Meanwhile, it has been revealed that US nuclear submarine USS Nevada reached the US defence base on the Guam Islands in the Pacific Ocean. The submarine sailed close to the Taiwanese marine region in the Pacific during its transit. This is the first instance in many years that a US nuclear submarine has passed through this region and reached near the Guam defence base. The US Navy announced that this visit was only to reassure its allies in the region.

The United States and Japan have decided on making the bilateral defence cooperation more comprehensive to counter the Chinese plans drawn up against Taiwan. Accordingly, there are indications of an increase in the stock of missiles and other vital weapons on the US and Japanese bases near Taiwan.
