Jewish cultural centre opens in Taiwan with presence of Taiwanese Vice President Lai Ching-te

Taipei – A multi-purpose Jewish cultural centre opens in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan. ‘Taiwanese and Jews respect the values of human rights and freedom. Therefore, the centre will enhance the harmony between Taiwanese and Jewish cultures, said Taiwan’s Vice President Lai Ching-te, who was present at the opening of the centre. Jeffrey D. Schwartz, an industrialist who founded the centre, believes that the new centre will bring the Jewish and Taiwanese people closer. This centre of Jewism in Taiwan seems to be an announcement of increased cooperation between Israel and Taiwan.

Schwartz said the centre was set up to introduce one’s culture, traditions, education and religious practices. However, the objective is to go beyond the cultural and unify the strengths of the Taiwanese people and the virtues of the Jewish people, Schwartz said.

Jeffrey Schwartz said that they want Jews worldwide to see the values and beauty of Formosa Island and provide Taiwan with global trade opportunities. About a century ago, European seafarers referred to Taiwan as Formosa for trade until World War II. Therefore, the Jewish entrepreneur seemed to have hinted at a message by mentioning Taiwan with its old name.

Omer Caspi, Israel’s representative in Taiwan, also welcomed the creation of the Jewish Cultural Centre. Caspi said this was significant for Jews in Taiwan, as it was one of the few places in the world where Jews were safe during World War II. Therefore, the centre represents Israel’s interests in Taiwan, Caspi said.

Taiwan, Jewish, Culture, Israel, China,Internationally, Taiwan and Israel have not recognised each other. Despite this, there is economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. There were reports of covert military cooperation between Israel and Taiwan. There are claims of Israel providing Taiwan with an ‘Earth Roaming Observation System’ that both countries do not acknowledge.

Meanwhile, over the past few weeks, China has begun to take a stand against Israel on the international level. It was revealed last year that China had joined the anti-Israel front on the issue of Palestine as well as Iran. China has also been accused of cyberattacks in Israel. Last month, Jewish groups in the United States and Lithuania took an aggressive stance against China over its crackdown on Uyghurs in Xinjiang. The Jewish groups have called on the Biden administration and the international community to take action against China.
