Kyiv: Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen visited conflict-torn Ukraine and met with President Volodymyr Zelensky. The President of Ukraine said Iran is a common enemy of Israel and Ukraine. Israel’s foreign minister also announced that he would assist Ukraine against Iran. But Foreign Minister Cohen avoided openly criticizing Russia during his visit.
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine is coming to an end soon. Ukraine demanded that Israel, like other allies of the US, help us in this anti-Russian conflict. The US Biden administration also put pressure on Israel for this. But Israel refused to provide military assistance to Ukraine beyond providing humanitarian aid. Israel had made Ukraine and America aware that if they helped Ukraine in this conflict, Israel would have to lose Russia’s support for the anti-Iran operation in Syria.
After Benjamin Netanyahu’s government came to power in Israel a month ago, Ukraine again demanded military assistance from Israel. There were reports that Israel also responded positively to Ukraine. In such a situation, Israel’s Foreign Minister Eli Cohen’s visit to Ukraine on Thursday becomes significant. Cohen is the first senior Israeli official to visit Ukraine since the war broke out. On this occasion, Cohen met with Ukrainian President Zelensky and Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. President Zelensky said that Iran is a common enemy of Israel and Ukraine. Zelensky also called for the need to unite at the international level against Iran.
Cohen reported that during the meeting with Zelensky, cooperation against Iran was discussed. Israel also announced that it would provide air defence systems to Ukraine. The Israeli media claims the system will be handed over to Ukraine in three to six months. But it is not clear what mechanism Israel will provide to Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the Russian news channel criticized the Israeli foreign minister’s visit to Ukraine. Israel’s Foreign Minister visits Jew-hating Ukraine, reported a Russian news channel.
