Iran hands over Afghan embassy to Taliban – Northern Resistance Front criticises Iran

Islamabad: Iran has given a kind of recognition to the Taliban regime in Afghanistan by handing over Afghanistan’s embassy in the capital Tehran to the Taliban. Hence, for the first time in 18 months, a Taliban commander will assume responsibility as a diplomatic officer at the Afghan embassy in Iran. Afghanistan’s main opposition party, the Northern Resistance Front (NRF), criticised Iran’s endorsement of the Taliban’s illegitimate terrorist regime.

Moreover, the Taliban’s foreign ministry released information about these developments in Iran. A few days ago, the Taliban sent a seven-member team to Iran. The Taliban claimed that the squad included members with diplomatic experience. After detailed discussions with the Foreign Ministry of Iran officials, it was decided to hand over the Afghan embassy in the capital of Tehran to the Taliban. This has been an important event, and it will further develop cooperation between Afghanistan and Iran, the Taliban said.

Furthermore, the increasing attacks by IS and other terrorist organisations in Afghanistan have been claimed to be the main reason behind this decision of Iran. Analysts say Iran has approved the Taliban embassy to prevent infiltration of IS militants into Iran’s borders. But analysts have been warning that this decision could threaten the safety of Afghan refugees who have sought refuge in Iran for the past four decades.

Besides, Russia, China, Pakistan, Turkey, Qatar, and Malaysia, along with Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, neighbouring countries of Afghanistan, have handed over their embassies to the Taliban. Tajikistan has been the only neighbour of Afghanistan that has refused to hand over its embassy to the Taliban, insisting that it does not accept the Taliban’s rule.

Meanwhile, by handing over the Afghan embassy to the Taliban, Iran seems to endorse the Taliban regime in Afghanistan indirectly.
