Firing along the maritime border of the two Korean countries – Tensions in the Korean region

Seoul: There was firing in North and South Korean navies, accusing each other of violating the disputed maritime boundary. Twelve years ago, a South Korean Navy ship had sunk after a shooting incident between the navies of the two Korean countries in the same area. Forty-six jawans were killed therein. Korean countriesOn Monday morning, around 3:42 am, the firing incident occurred near the Korean sea border called Northern Limit Line (NLL). A North Korean merchant ship entered South Korean waters despite repeated warnings. The South Korean military has said that warning shots had to be fired to stop the communist Korean vessel. The North Korean navy fired ten cannon shells at the South Korean ship about 90 minutes later. South Korea says there were no casualties.

However, this has brought back the memories of 2010, said the international media. Twelve years ago, the North Korean Navy heavily attacked a South Korean ship travelling through the same NLL area and an island. A South Korean Navy destroyer deployed to patrol the region had been submerged in the next few hours. Forty-six jawans, including naval officers, had been killed therein. Korean countriesSouth Korea had accused North Korea of launching a Torpedo and attacking its ship. Therefore, there was a high possibility of a new conflict between the two Korean countries over the maritime dispute after Monday’s incident.

Moreover, North Korea has increased the intensity of its ballistic missile tests over the past year and a half. North Korea has conducted 41 ballistic missile tests in the last ten months. Also, North Korea changed its law and announced that its country was nuclear-armed. There were orders to launch a nuclear attack on the enemy country if there was a fatal attack on the North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. This threat from North Korea has increased the tension in the region, and along with South Korea, even Japan looks at it very seriously.
