east-africaLast week, the Portuguese Foreign Minister visited the East African country of Mozambique. Santos visited the Mozambique capital of Maputo, during his visit and was apprised of the increasing terrorist activities in the country. After that, while addressing the European parliament, Santos said that Mozambique was in dire need of assistance from the European Union.

The European Union has supplied humanitarian aid to Mozambique in the past. The Union has also helped the country in development projects. But Santos appealed that the Union also needs to think seriously, regarding the security of Mozambique. The Portuguese Foreign Minister suggested that the European Union should supply the weapons, required for the counter-terrorism actions, to the Mozambique military.

Santos claimed that the security of Mozambique and other countries in East Africa, rich in natural gas reserves, is in the interest of the European Union. If the Union assisted Mozambique in the counter-terrorism actions, it would become difficult for the terrorist to increase their influence in the country. Otherwise, Mozambique and other East African countries will become a safe haven for the terrorists. The Portuguese Foreign Minister warned that all the international terrorist organisations would set up bases in these countries.

Meanwhile, the European Union has already signed agreements with this East African country for natural gas exploration. European companies, Total and Axon Mobile, have even made investments in Mozambique from the fuel manufacturing sector.
