Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a target of criticism from within Turkey for his faulty economic policies, has started efforts to improve relations with Israel and the Arab countries. Against this background, the Turkish President had extended an invitation to the Israeli President.

During the visit, discussions regarding improving cooperation in the diplomatic, economic, and trade sectors were held. Sources from the Turkish government clarified that this included the issue of building an undersea fuel gas pipeline. Israeli sources held discussions between Israel and Turkey that the Israeli oil projects could be used for this purpose.

The project is owned by the Israeli company NewMed Energy and US company Chevron. Currently, the gas produced from the field is supplied to Jordan, Egypt, and Israel. The Israeli company has set the target of taking gas production to 21 billion cubic feet per annum.

In that situation, this gas can be supplied to the European countries. Therefore, as per Israeli media, Israel could prove to be an option for the Russian gas for the European countries. As per Turkish officials, President Erdogan has expressed a willingness to help Israel. Turkish government sources are claiming those discussions were held during the visit of the Israeli President regarding reaching the gas pipeline to Europe through the sea route.

But Israeli analysts are claiming that building this pipeline between Israel and Turkey will not be an easy task as this pipeline will pass through the marine regions of Cyprus and Syria. Turkey does not accept the existence of Cyprus. Whereas Turkey has enmity with the Assad government in Syria. Israeli analysts claimed that building this pipeline would pose a major challenge to President Erdogan.
