US will have to change its vague policies regarding Taiwan: ex-US State Secretary Mike Pompeo

Taipei/Washington/Beijing: – The Ukraine conflict has demonstrated that taking a position on the fence without choosing sides can prove dangerous. The rulers with monopolistic regimes can use this ambiguity to their advantage. Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo demanded that the United States have a clear stand that Taiwan is an independent country. While making this demand during a function organised by the Hudson Institute in the United States, Pompeo reiterated that Taiwan is not a part of the Chinese communist party.

Media and analysts have been consistently warning that against the background of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, China is waiting for the right opportunity to attack Taiwan. Since the last few days, it has been observed that the United States is becoming more active, taking this possibility into account. Since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the United States has despatched its destroyer in the Taiwanese marine region. A delegation from the United States also visited Taiwan.

The United States has announced a new Indo-Pacific policy. This includes the issue of Taiwanese security. The Indo-Pacific policy mentions that the United States will assist Taiwan to augment its self-defence capabilities. Despite this, the United States is not willing to remove the ambiguity in its Taiwan policy. The United States has stressed only supplying defence equipment, maintaining limited diplomatic and trade relations. The former Secretary of State also confessed that both the political parties in the United States are guilty of such a stand.

Pompeo said that if China is forced to reconsider the decision to take over Taiwan, there has to be a change in the old US policies. Pompeo had appealed to the United States government. The people have to accept that Taiwan is an independent sovereign country during his visit to Taiwan a few weeks ago.
