Xi Jinping, who took over the post of President of China for the third time in a row, addressed his country during the National People’s Congress (NPC) legislative session on Monday. ‘The People’s Liberation Army must build a ‘Great Wall of Steel’ to safeguard China’s sovereignty, security and interests,’ President Xi Jinping said. It is claimed that the President of China has threatened Taiwan and neighbouring countries through this remark. Xi Jinping called for China to take a broad and active role at the global level. The President of China gave an example of mediation between Iran and Saudi Arabia by China last week. ‘Our country should take an active role on the security front and reforms in the global governance system. Xi Jinping claimed that this would positively affect global peace and development. Taking note of the announcement made by the President of China, the international media said that China is striving for the leadership of the Middle East. The media say that China’s confidence has increased after the meeting between the national security advisers of Iran and Saudi Arabia.

The Wall Street Journal, a leading American newspaper, reported that China has big ambitions beyond the Iran-Saudi talks. In December last year, the President of China visited Saudi Arabia and held a meeting with the Gulf Cooperation Council-GCC. On the occasion of this meeting, the President of China signed agreements worth billions of dollars with Saudi and Arab allies. At the same time, the American newspaper reported that President Jinping had initiated moves regarding the meeting between Iran and the GCC.

Last month, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi visited China and met President Xi Jinping. After this, the Iran-Saudi meeting process gained momentum. Discussions also started regarding the meeting between Iran and GCC. The meeting in Iran and GCC, which comprises Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar, will be held by the end of next year. The American newspaper claimed that the meeting could be held with the mediation of President Jinping in the capital Beijing. According to the American newspaper, if China succeeds in arranging a meeting between the GCC and Iran with Saudi Arabia, it will be a major diplomatic victory for President Xi Jinping. Xi Jinping has had a big failure on Covid and regional issues in the last three years. His image in the country and within the Communist Party has been tarnished. Therefore, due to the Iran-GCC meeting, Xi Jinping can achieve great success at the political and international level and the newspaper pointed out that the failed policy of US President Joe Biden in the Middle East is the reason for this.

During Biden’s tenure, relations between the US, Saudi Arabia, and UAE deteriorated. The US has withdrawn the air security of both these Arab allies. This has created a vacuum in the Middle East and the American newspaper has pointed out that China is taking advantage of this.
