Two days ago, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang separately discussed over the phone with Israel’s Foreign Minister Eli Cohen and Palestine’s Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki. Citing China’s successful mediation between Saudi Arabia and Iran last month, Gang proposed peace talks with Israel’s foreign minister. Foreign Minister Gang said that Saudi-Iran set a good example of resolving differences through discussion, leaving aside the disputes between each other. He added that Israel must show political courage and start peace talks with Palestine. He further said that China is ready to mediate.

The Chinese Foreign Minister also made the same proposal in a discussion with the Foreign Minister of Palestine, Riyad Al-Maliki. Besides, Gang claimed that China would play an active role in mediating Israel-Palestine. China released partial details of the talks with Israeli-Palestinian leaders two days later. Palestine has not responded to China’s proposal. But Israel’s Foreign Ministry has explicitly indicated that it does not support China’s proposal for peace talks.

Moreover, Israel’s Foreign Ministry stated that Foreign Minister Cohen and Foreign Minister Gang discussed maintaining peace in the Temple Mount. Also, Israel’s Foreign Minister raised the issue of Iran’s nuclear programme at this time. In addition, Israel informed that Foreign Minister Cohen appealed to China to assist Israel in preventing Iran from developing a nuclear bomb. However, Israel’s Foreign Ministry refrained from responding in even a word on Palestine’s issue. Therefore, it has been clear that despite China’s claims, Israel was not ready for peace talks.

Meanwhile, there were claims that China was increasing its influence in the Gulf by breaking the impact of the US. But the Israeli media has been criticising China, which says that the One-China policy regarding Taiwan was final, has adopted a two-pronged ‘Two State Policy’ regarding Israel-Palestine.
