Jerusalem – Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, met Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz. The Israeli defence ministry announced that President Abbas visited his residence. Infuriated by this news, Hamas has criticised President Abbas for his visit to Israel and accused him of betraying Palestine.
In August, the Israeli Defence Minister had met President Abbas at the Fatah party’s headquarters in West Bank. This was the first meeting between the Israeli and Palestine leaders for many years. Subsequently, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett declared to cease any peace talks with Palestinian leaders. This seemed to end any hope of improving relations between Israel and Palestine.
However, on Tuesday, following the visit of Palestinian President Abbas to the Israeli Defence Minister’s residence has given some hope of resuming dialogue between Israel and Palestine.
