Africa facing food crisis due to western sanctions against Russia – African Union Chief criticises

Moscow: The United States and European countries have blamed the conflict between Russia and Ukraine for rising inflation and famine in Africa. But President of Senegal and the Chief of the African Union, Macky Sall, has dismissed these accusations against Russia. President Sall criticised that instead, the threat of the food crisis increased given the sanctions imposed by the western countries on Russia.

Russia and Ukraine are known as the largest exporters of food grain. International analysts and organisations are warning that the countries dependent on these countries will face a shortage of food grains given the conflict sparked between these two countries. It is claimed that the African countries are the worst affected due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

In this scenario, Chief of the African Union Macky Sall and Faki Mahamat, President of the African Union, visited Russia. The leaders of the African Union net Russian President Vladimir Putin at a government resort in Sochi. After that, while speaking to the media, Chief of the African Union Macky Sall said that the situation in the African countries has become grave given the sanctions imposed against Russia.

The African countries are failing to import food grain and fertilisers necessary for agriculture, given the sanctions imposed by the Western countries. Sall reminded that this is directly connected to the developing food crisis in the African countries. Sall claimed that the main issues in front of the world are food crisis and sanctions against Russia.

Meanwhile, even before Russia declared military operation against Ukraine, a population of more than 12.5 million in the Horn of Africa region was faced with starvation. Russian media are pointing out that a UN group had warned that the situation had become grave in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia, who are currently facing a famine. Therefore, the Russian media are claiming that Russia is not entirely responsible for the food crisis in Africa.
