United States warns Mali as it seeks help from Russian mercenaries to fight terrorism

Washington/ Paris: Over the last few years, Mali’s military regime has sought the help of Russian contract soldiers to fight against terrorist outfits. Mali deployed contract soldiers of Wagner company by saying that the French soldiers had failed their mission until now. US AFRICOM Chief General Stephen Townsend imparted its information. However, General Townsend warned that seeking help from Russian contract soldiers won’t go well for Mali’s security.

It is recognised as the third-largest gold producer country in Africa. But, the security and convenience in Mali have been a matter of concern. Some militant outfits associated with Al-Qaeda and IS, alongside other armed forces, are challenging the security of Mali. Hence, Mali has sought help of Russian contract soldiers to counter these militant outfits.

The Chief of US African Command aka AFRICOM, General Stephen Townsend, imparted this information during a hearing of the House Armed Services Committee. But, Mali military regime’s chief Col. Goita is unsatisfied by this action, said General Townsend.

Furthermore, Col. Goita’s regime has slammed the French military for failing against terrorism in Mali. Hence, the Mali military regime has deployed Russian contractor soldiers of Wagner company to act against terrorism, said General Townsend. He also informed that nearly a thousand Wagner soldiers are currently deployed in Mali.

General Townsend said Mali’s military regime has been warned, citing the gruesome campaign Wagner soldiers carried out in Syria and other countries. But, Mali’s military regime has ignored this instruction by the United States and prioritised deployed Wagner soldiers, informed General Townsend before the senate.

Meanwhile, in the last few months, US influence is claimed to be declining. Besides, along with Mali, Central African Republic countries have defied US advice and established cooperation with Russian Wagner. US military analysts have drawn attention to it.
